Due to my unfortunate luck last winter, I slipped, fell on some ice, and broke my ankle in two places. For three months I found myself isolated and dependent on others, unable to do the things that I had always done, including driving. With no family nearby, a friend helped me the best that she could, but there came a point when she was not able to drive me to all of my appointments. By way of the internet, I was relieved to find out Community Support Connections – Meals on Wheels and More (CSC) offers a transportation program to take people to medical appointments for an extremely reasonable cost. From the friendly voices that answer the phones, to the agency drivers who are passionate about their jobs and the volunteers who do this out of the goodness of their hearts, I enjoyed everything about this agency! When I needed help the most, CSC was there.
Fast-forward three months, I was well on my way in my recovery, and I decided I had to give back. That is when I met Joyce.
I was matched with Joyce through CSC’s Friendly Visiting program. She is someone who also has no family in town, and had been feeling isolated herself. Our similarities only grew from there. We are both aspiring novelists, we love to read, we enjoy the same kinds of music and what are the chances, we both have a love of karaoke! Every couple of weeks, we get together and belt out our favorite duets at local karaoke clubs. We also keep in touch weekly over the phone! We love to laugh together, and CSC could not have made a better match!
Joyce has shared with me that this relationship has given her a sense of belonging to her community. She says getting out of the house is not the same as getting out of the house with a friend, and CSC has given that to her.
What happened to me could happen to anyone, and it was such an eye opening and life changing experience. It taught me the small things we take for granted could be gone in an instant. For me, losing my independence was only temporary, but for some, it is permanent.
During this season of giving, I urge you to please consider supporting people like Joyce and myself with a donation to CSC. With your contribution, you will be able to give the gift of a ride, friendship, Meals on Wheels or much, much more to your neighbour.
